JCU partnership delivers positive outcomes

Delivery of last year's Youth Climate Summit, a review of the city's cultural and creative industries, and building a strategy to position the region as the smart green capital of Australia, were among projects delivered collaboratively by Council and James Cook University (JCU) in the past year.

Council and JCU signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in October 2019 with the intention to work together on initiatives, projects, and opportunities to benefit the broader Cairns community.

A report to Council today provided an update on the projects, initiatives and activities delivered as part of the MOU during 2021, which included:

  • The Youth Climate Summit 2021
  • Review of Council activities against UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Strategic input into positioning Cairns and the Far North Queensland region as the capital of the Smart Green Economy in Australia
  • Research (also involving CQUniversity) into the strength of the city's cultural and creative industries
  • Research into urban heat and future planning
  • Council has a hotdesk at JCU's Ideas Lab

The current MOU expires in 2024, with the option to extend for a further five years.
