The latest edition of the renowned THE World University Ranking compares 2,191 universities across 115 countries and regions. With its 179th global ranking, 17th place in Germany, and 3rd in Bavaria, Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) continues to be among the top research universities in the country.

Highly Cited Publications and Practical Impact

JMU's outstanding research quality secured it a worldwide ranking of 97th and 5th place within Germany, putting it on par with several of Germany's current Universities of Excellence. Bibliometric analyses show that publications by Würzburg researchers are highly cited and influential, underscoring their strong impact on the international scientific community. The indicator measures the number of highly cited papers relative to the size of the academic staff.

In the field of knowledge transfer, JMU stood out ranking 52nd worldwide and 9th in Germany. This reflects the university's success in translating academic research into real-world applications. The ranking evaluates transfer performance through research income from industry and foundations (relative to academic staff) and the number of publications cited in patents.

Well Positioned for the Excellence Strategy Competition

University President Professor Paul Pauli welcomed the results, emphasizing the recognition of Würzburg's research quality across multiple international rankings: "The consistently high rating of our research performance in international rankings confirms that we are very well positioned for the upcoming Excellence Competition."

The THE Ranking

The ranking is based on 18 performance indicators, including publication and citation metrics, research and teaching reputation, research funding, internationalization, and student-staff ratio.

JMU achieved an overall score of 60.1 points, reflecting strong performance across five key dimensions: research quality, research environment, teaching, transfer, and international outlook.
