Job growth outpaces regional cities

Greater Geelong is experiencing the fastest employment growth of all large Australian regional cities, becoming a leader in job creation.

New data presented by .id Consulting in the Geelong Economic Profile shows there are 135,500 jobs in the Geelong region, with 12,000 new jobs created in 2022 alone. This is the fastest growth seen in records spanning 20 years.

Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,931 jobs), Construction (+1,603) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,423) were behind the largest job increases. Nearly 22,000 businesses are operating in the region.

Greater Geelong's estimated Gross Regional Product (GRP) was $17.58 billion in the year ending June 2022 representing a 10.3 per cent increase in one year, also the fastest growth in 20 years. Benchmarking shows that of the top 20 largest economies nationally in terms of GRP, Greater Geelong had the second fastest growth (only behind Karratha and its mining industry).

There are nearly 170 major construction projects valued over $10 million, proposed, approved, under construction or recently completed in our municipality.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

Being a strong competitor in the national jobs market contributes to the liveability and prosperity of our region.

The diversification of our local economy, significant private and public investment, a growing number of major organisations calling Geelong home and population growth have increased the type and amount of employment opportunities available.

More people are realising that not only does Greater Geelong have an enviable lifestyle and stunning natural environment, but there are competitive employment options in a range of fields.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken - Chair of the Strong Local Economy portfolio

Our region is made up of bright and talented community members who contribute so much to Australia's success.

Geelong's economy is thriving, but we have the size, scale and economic base to develop even further.

As well as offering employment opportunities for our growing population, we're looking to attract talent and private investment from the capitals to drive our economy forward.
