Johns Hopkins University has been ranked No. 15 in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024, which were released today and compare 1,904 colleges and universities from around the globe.
The publication's key performance indicators place Hopkins at No. 1 in the world in its "Industry" categories, which includes measures of innovation, knowledge-transfer, and commercial funding.
Hopkins has routinely been ranked among the world's best universities by Times Higher Education and was also 15th overall last year. Out of 169 U.S. schools included in the rankings this year, Hopkins is No. 9, according to THE.
Times Higher Education measures colleges and universities based on 18 key performance indicators in the following five categories:
Teaching (where Hopkins ranked No. 23), which considers the overall quality of a university's learning environment, as well as how committed it is to supporting its students. Factors considered include teaching reputation, student-staff ratio, and institutional income.
Research Environment (where Hopkins ranked No. 17), which examines the productivity, reputation, and income of an institution's research.
Research Quality (where Hopkins ranked No. 21), which analyzes the strength, excellence, and influence of a university's research, as well as how often that research is cited.
Industry (where Hopkins ranked No. 1), which weighs a university's ability to support industry and the economy through its innovations, as well as its talent in attracting funding from the commercial marketplace. It also includes the number of patents that cite research from the university.
International Outlook (where Hopkins ranked No. 198), which judges a university's ability to attract students and faculty internationally, as well as the institution's relevance on the world stage. This includes the proportion of international staff, students, and co-authorship at a university.
Earlier this month, Hopkins was ranked No. 9 nationally in U.S. News & World Report's annual undergraduate rankings.
