The much-anticipated Kal City Centre project has officially kicked off with a sod-turning ceremony in Kalgoorlie's St Barbara Square held today.
Jointly funded by the McGowan Government and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the $16 million project will upgrade Kalgoorlie's CBD for the community, visitors and local businesses.
The redevelopment will include a complete refurbishment of St Barbara Square and Laneway to the rear entrance of the City Markets arcade.
The project will deliver a water feature, new gardens, areas for alfresco dining and entertainment areas as well as a playground area.
Other features of the Kal City Centre project include:
- Public art including Aboriginal artwork and installations;
- A central stage for entertainment and community events, including a projector for outdoor movies and displays;
- Night lighting and CCTV to improve public safety and support the night economy; and
- New paving, street furniture, shade canopy, gardens and seating areas.
Works have been staged to minimise disruptions to business, with the first major works to begin in October.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"The Kal City Centre project will deliver a major upgrade of the Kalgoorlie CBD into a vibrant, functional centre for retail businesses, the community and visitors.
"It will help to reposition Kalgoorlie's CBD as an attractive place to be, revitalising the city centre and creating a safer local environment.
"Local businesses will benefit from a boost in visitation, activation of public spaces and a better visitor experience.
"We have ensured this project delivers tangible economic benefits in construction, providing opportunities for both local and Aboriginal businesses, and direct employment with project contractors."
As stated by Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:
"I am absolutely thrilled to finally see the commencement of the KCC Project, and I am looking forward to the difference it is going to make to Hannan Street.
"Liveability in any community is an important component. I have seen the difference these kind of projects have made in Broome and Margaret River, and I'm looking forward to see similar benefits for us here in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
"The McGowan Government understands what regional WA needs and I am happy to be a part of a Government that puts back into regional communities."
