Kallista Community House Plans Its Future

Yarra Ranges Shire Council

Yarra Ranges Council is continuing to plan for the future of Kallista, with a township Streetscape Masterplan proposed for 2027 including consideration of future opportunities for the Kallista Community House site.

The Kallista Community House has remained closed since 2022 after sustaining roof damage and being deemed unsafe for use. Community activities and events have been and can continue to be hosted at Kallista Mechanics Hall and Council has been supporting local advocacy for improvements to the Mechanics Hall, which is not a Council asset.

Earlier this year, Council confirmed it was not in a position to undertake the significant works required to repair and reopen the former Kallista Community House. The building has been identified for future demolition, subject to a formal Council decision and the availability of funding.

Council recognises there is community interest in the future of the Community House site and remains committed to working with residents on opportunities for the location as planning progresses.

As part of Council's longer-term planning for Kallista, a Streetscape Masterplan will be undertaken for the township. The masterplan will focus on the main activity centre, including the Church Street precinct, and will help identify opportunities to support the township's future needs and enhance the local area.

Council is progressing streetscape planning for Sassafras and Olinda, with work on the Kallista Streetscape Masterplan expected to commence mid-to-late 2027. To develop a coordinated and well-considered plan for Kallista, it is important to have clarity about the area and infrastructure that will form part of the future streetscape. Resolving the proposed demolition will help provide that certainty and allow the streetscape planning process to move forward.

The project will include community consultation, providing residents, businesses and community groups with an opportunity to contribute to the future vision for Kallista. It will also be an opportunity to hear about short term, low cost options to activate the site ahead of longer term improvements. Council will provide further information about engagement opportunities closer to the commencement of the project.

Council remains committed to working with the community to help shape both the future of the Community House site and the long-term planning and development of the township.
