Western Australia Took Centre Stage At AusBiotech 2026

An industry delegation showcased local innovation and expertise at Australia's leading biotechnology conference.

Western Australia's (WA) biomedical sector was on show at AusBiotech 2026, with a delegation of 19 WA companies and organisations attending Australia's premier biotechnology conference in Queensland from 21 to 23 October.

Led by the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification in collaboration with the Department of Health, the delegation highlighted WA's strengths across medical research, biotechnology, clinical trials, health innovation and advanced manufacturing.

A key highlight was the keynote address delivered by Winthrop Professor Fiona Wood AO, a WA Science Hall of Fame inductee, on the development and commercialisation of the groundbreaking ReCell spray-on skin technology.

Several other industry leaders from across WA's biomedical sector also spoke at the conference, including:

  • Tim Leen, Executive Director Research and Innovation at the Department of Health, Professor Kevin Pfleger from The University of Western Australia and WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub, and Dr James Williams from Health Translation Group and Proteomics International, on where healthcare sees the future of medtech.
  • Dr Bridget Ryan, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at OncoRes Medical, on reinventing surgery and the next generation of intelligent interventions.
  • Mr Adam Cias, Manufacturing Manager at Orthocell and Professor Ulrike Fiedler, Strategic Advisor at BioCina, on manufacturing as Australia's strategic advantage.
  • Dr Liz Dallimore, CEO and Managing Director at Argenica Therapeutics, on the new global biotech landscape and exploring opportunities beyond borders.
  • A/Professor Maina Kava, Pediatric Neurologist at Perth Children's Hospital, on re-writing patient stories with gene therapy.

The strong WA presence at AusBiotech 2026 demonstrated the depth and diversity of the State's thriving biomedical ecosystem and provided valuable opportunities for WA organisations to strengthen industry networks.
