Kat McNamara MLA Resigns Nightcliff Seat for Health

Australian Greens

On Monday 9 February 2026, Kat McNamara MLA, the NT Greens Member for Nightcliff, announced their resignation from the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory, effective on the same day, citing health reasons.

Mx McNamara was the first Greens representative elected to the NT Legislative Assembly in 2024, when they defeated the former Chief Minister Natasha Fyles.

In Parliament, they have been a strong advocate for climate action, gambling reform, integrity, social justice, renters' rights, and for raising awareness of the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

Their advocacy has seen international recognition and has brought important scrutiny to the Northern Territory Parliament.

They have made an enormous contribution to the electorate of Nightcliff, supporting and listening to constituents, hosting regular community dinners, film nights, policy information sessions, and starting Nightcliff's first community pantry.

They have reimagined what it means to be a Member of the Legislative Assembly and have paved the way for strong progressive representation into the future.

We are grateful to Mx McNamara and their family, and wish them all the best. We ask that the community respect Mx McNamara's privacy at this time.

We are determined to keep Nightcliff Green and to continue Kat's work.

The NT Greens will now go to its members to conduct a democratic preselection. We look forward to announcing our candidate for the upcoming by-election soon.

The Greens are in a strong position in the Northern Territory, ready to continue standing up for what matters - a liveable climate, justice for First Nations, safe and cohesive communities, and a good home for everyone.
