Keeping our community safe

We can all play a role in helping to keep our community safe.

While Bayside is generally considered to be a safe community Council works closely with Victoria Police, Neighbourhood Watch and other organisations to address safety issues within our municipality.

Bayside Mayor Cr Hanna El Mouallem said everyone deserves to feel safe.

"I know recent incidents reported in the media are cause for concern for many in our community. I have personally spoken to senior Victoria Police this week to express my concern and offer Council's continued support."

While responding to crime is the responsibility of Victoria Police, Council and our partners also have a role to play in crime prevention," Cr El Mouallem said.

"We want everyone to feel safe in Bayside and we'll continue to work with Victoria Police, Neighbourhood Watch and other partners to identify community safety issues and how Council can assist," Cr El Mouallem said.

"We will also continue to advocate for increased police resources to focus on the Bayside area."

Council facilitates the Bayside Safety Committee with membership including Victoria Police, Neighbourhood Watch, Department of Justice and Community Safety and other key organisations. We also actively participate on the Bayside Glen Eira Crime Prevention Committee which aims to take a pro-active approach to community safety.

Bayside community members can also assist by paying attention to home and personal security. Victoria Police report that across March and April, more than 70 per cent of all burglaries in suburbs such as Brighton, Cheltenham, Black Rock, Sandringham, and Mordialloc occurred in properties with unlocked/open doors/windows and no signs of forced entry.

Locking your home and cars can play a significant role in deterring opportunistic thieves who may approach multiple houses to find the easiest access point.

We recently upgraded street lighting in some streets and will continue in other priority areas. Bayside prunes street and park trees to ensure branches are clear of roadways, footpaths and property boundaries. We will also prune a tree where it is significantly impacting street lighting.
