Keeping Pets Safe This Cyclone & Storm Season

Darwin City Council

Territory storms can roll in quickly and often without warning. While we prepare our homes and families, it's just as important to have an emergency plan for our pets. A little preparation now can make a big difference to their safety and your peace of mind.

PLAN AHEAD THIS STORM SEASON

  • ensure your pets are microchipped and registered for the best chance of reuniting with them, should they get lost
  • be ready for emergency evacuation
    • plan for easy access to five days of food and water
    • organise temporary accommodation in advance in case an evacuation requires relocation
    • share your emergency plan with family, friends, or neighbours in case you can't get home during a severe storm (pets should only be left behind in extreme, life-threatening situations)
  • if your pet is anxious or noise-phobic, speak with a behaviour specialist or vet for support.

WHAT TO CONSIDER PACKING IN YOUR PET EMERGENCY KIT

  • medications and calming products
  • five-day supply of food and water
  • crate or carrier
  • leash, collar, and ID tag
  • waterproof bag with documents (microchip, vaccination, vet contacts)
  • waste bags, litter tray, wipes or gloves
  • familiar bedding or toys for comfort.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME EACH DAY, CONSIDER

  • Is my pet safe and contained if a storm hits?
  • Do they have access to dry food and clean water?
  • Does my pet have a safe, familiar space?
  • Is my emergency plan accessible to someone who can help if I can't get home?

SUPPORTING ANXIOUS PETS

  • provide a quiet, secure environment with shelter and bedding
  • speak with your vet about medication if needed
  • use calming products like:
    • pet relax spray - available free at City of Darwin Libraries and the Civic Centre (request one from staff)
    • calming pheromone diffusers for cats (e.g. Feliway)
    • calming pheromone collars for dogs (e.g. Adaptil)
    • herbal remedies (available at Aussie Pooch)
    • lick mats for sensory stimulation
    • thunder jackets (for short-term use under supervision only)

Preparing early means you can act quickly and confidently when weather conditions change. Let's keep our pets safe this storm season.
