Kerbside bin inspections lead to improved recycling

To assist residents understanding of what goes into the recycling bin the City has implemented a broad range of education programs. One of these programs is our kerbside yellow-lidded recycling bin inspection program.

Each week the program inspects around 6,000 bins across the municipality to assist residents to improve recycling rates and reduce contamination. Contamination refers to items that cannot be recycled though the yellow-lidded recycling bin.

The program involves following the collection truck as it empties each bin. Council officers receive live images of material being emptied from the bin into the recycle truck.

Bins containing non-recyclable material have an education sticker placed on the bin. This is to inform the householder what non-recyclable items were found and what are the alternative recycling or disposal options.

It is not a penalty program, but an education program to help householders understand what they can recycle through the kerbside service. Householder do not receive a fine if a sticker is placed on their bin.
