Children at Aspley East Kindergarten will now be able to enjoy a new and improved playground thanks to a Federal Liberal and Nationals Government-funded upgrade to the play area.
Luke Howarth MP, Federal Member for Petrie, who attended the official opening on the weekend said the project, which involved the removal of outdated and unusable equipment to create a new and refurbished playground, would support the ongoing viability of the kindergarten.
“When I was asked by the kindy last year to see if the Federal Government could help replace the old playground, I set up a petition to see how much support there would be for a new playground and surprisingly we received 20 pages of names,” said Mr Howarth.
“I then wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Minister for Regional Development, about funding this project saying it was really important to the community.
“I’m thrilled that the children now have a modern play area to develop their gross and fine motor skills thanks to the Australian Government.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack, said the upgrade was sorely needed as previous playground equipment went 15 years without any refurbishment.
“A playground is not just a place for kids to run around, it is where children can learn how to interact with each other and challenge themselves – that’s the major benefit this playground project will provide,” Mr McCormack said.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the project was great news for families of Aspley, as people want to be close to educational spaces and opportunities for their families.
“We want communities to thrive and are pleased to support self-sustainable activities that are another way we are making Brisbane better and protecting our fantastic quality of life,” Cr Schrinner said.
This project was jointly funded with the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government investing $100,000 from the Community Development Grants Programme , Brisbane City Council contributing $3,318 and Aspley East Kindergarten and Preschool Association $18,056.
