Buckingham Palace confirms His Majesty is taking on position previously held by his father, continuing longstanding royal support
His Majesty King Charles III has taken on the role of royal patron of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Members of the Royal Family serve as patrons of more than 3,000 charities, public service organisations, military associations and professional bodies across the UK and worldwide. They show their support for their patronages in a range of ways such as attending events or marking milestones, but they are not involved in day-to-day management or governance.
Previously, the King's father HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was patron of LSHTM for almost 70 years from 1952 until his death in 2021.
Prince Philip made numerous visits to LSHTM in that time, including during its centenary celebration in 1999, and he hosted our closest supporters at Buckingham Palace.
Professor Liam Smeeth, the Director of LSHTM, said: "I'm delighted that His Majesty has chosen to be our patron. It means a great deal to LSHTM to have his support, and continue our longstanding connection with the Royal Family.
"Among other things, the King is a committed advocate for action for a sustainable future. We look forward to engaging with him about our work in research and education to help create a more healthy, sustainable and equitable world."
