Council has marked its third consecutive year supporting digital inclusion in local schools by donating 106 decommissioned laptops to the This is 'IT' Schools initiative, run by the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN).
Kingston CEO Peter Bean met with SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons to officially hand over the laptops, which will be distributed to students across Westall Secondary College, Cheltenham Secondary College, Mordialloc Secondary College, Parkdale Secondary College, and Oakwood School (Chelsea).
These laptops have reached their end of service life within Council, but they still have value in the hands of students who need them most. It's a smart, sustainable way to support local young people and reduce e-waste.
Each device is securely wiped and refurbished by Kingston's IT department before being delivered to SELLEN. The program focuses on assisting students experiencing financial or social disadvantage - those who may not otherwise have access to the digital tools essential for modern learning.
Launched in 2020, This is 'IT' Schools fills a crucial gap in school support. While many assistance schemes cover uniforms and books, access to a personal device has often been overlooked.
By providing laptops, the initiative empowers students to engage more fully in their education, improving long-term prospects in training, employment and further study.
Over the past three years Kingston has donated hundreds of laptops through the program, reaffirming our commitment to sustainability, social equity and educational opportunity.
