Kingston Fire Crew Ready for Action

Communities south of Hobart will see strengthened emergency response capability, with career firefighters now based out of the Kingston Fire Station for the first time.

A crew of one officer and three firefighters are now working day shifts from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis said the new day crew would back up the existing volunteer brigades in the fast-growing region.

"The Kingston Volunteer Fire Brigade is the busiest in the State, responding to hundreds of incidents per year," Minister Ellis said.

"They do an incredible job, but as volunteers they balance that service with work, family and other commitments.

"To back them up, a dedicated career firefighter day crew is now on duty five days a week, strengthening local coverage during working hours.

"The Station will be further bolstered with a new Medium Urban Pumper to be delivered in the coming weeks."

Treasurer Eric Abetz, welcomed the boost to the region.

"Kingborough is one of the fastest growing regions in the State, with over 40,000 residents," the Treasurer said.

"We are delivering for Tasmania, with this new day crew responding to fires and bringing specialist road-crash rescue capability to the region.

"This means reduced response times to serious road accidents.

"This Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmanians, strengthening our emergency capability in Kingston, the Channel and the Huon Valley."
