Kingston's green, open spaces the winners in successful funding bid
A new pocket park is to be created in Moorabbin thanks to a funding boost from the Victorian Government. Funding has also been received to help expand the off-leash dog park at Roy Dore Reserve in Carrum.
Council has been awarded close to $1M to help fund the two projects as part of Victoria's Local Parks Program giving families much-needed green space for recreation and relaxation.
Kingston Mayor Georgina Oxley said she was thrilled Council had been successful in getting the funding approved so it could move forward with creating these vital community assets.
"Social isolation has reminded us all how important open green space is for our health and wellbeing so it's fantastic to receive the news we can push ahead with the development of a new pocket park for the Moorabbin community and the Roy Dore Reserve off-leash dog park," said Cr Oxley.
Council will receive $275,000 to go towards installing new fencing at the off-leash dog park at Roy Dore as well as new seating, paths and planting.
Another $700,000 will go towards creating the pocket park in Moorabbin.
In 2019 Council purchased 2 Horscroft Place with the intention of creating a new pocket park for the community and improving the streetscape and accessibility from Moorabbin station and the shops, through to Moorabbin Reserve and beyond to the Hospital and TAFE.
"This vision is one step closer thanks to the funding announcement," said Cr Oxley.
"Council has been investing heavily in recent years to improve our parks and open spaces across Kingston and we now have some fantastic parks, playgrounds, outdoor exercise centres and other facilities for the community to enjoy, plus more on the way.
"Thanks to the generous support of the Bentleigh Moorabbin Central Rotary Club and St Kilda Football Club a fantastic new outdoor exercise equipment area and community space has been developed in Moorabbin Reserve.
"Our brand-new Barker Street Park in the heart of Cheltenham has also been transformed with new outdoor gym equipment, picnic tables, walking tracks and open space."
In addition, Council is upgrading another nine playgrounds in Dingley Village, Edithvale, Mordialloc, Aspendale Gardens, Clayton South and Chelsea Heights.
