The iconic Kirra Eagle has landed back on the Gold Coast with plans now underway to reinstall the sculpture on Kirra Hill.

Installation at its original spot in R T Peak Memorial Park on Kirra Hill is expected in mid-May, weather permitting.

In the meantime, the sea eagle sculpture also known to locals as the "rusty chook" is being kept at a secure location at a City of Gold Coast depot.

The sculpture now needs to be treated to develop a protective layer of rust on the weathering steel while preparations for the installation get underway.

The Kirra Eagle was reproduced by artist Tobias Bennett with ARTPark managing the reproduction process.

"We know that residents will be extremely excited to see the return of this much-loved sculpture that has become a symbol of the Kirra community over decades," Division 14 Councillor Gail O'Neill said.

"While we acknowledge the time this process has taken, it's important to point out that it was a complex job for the artist.

"He has done a fantastic job and worked tirelessly to make sure his replica was completed to the highest and most accurate standard."

The sculpture is a public artwork of historical significance by the late local artist Craig Medson, originally installed in October 1983.

The sculpture was removed when construction began on the Kirra Hill renovation in 2021 as it was deemed structurally unsafe.

Expressions of Interest were invited to replicate the artwork, with the successful artist being selected in 2023.
