Kite Street to Get Raised Pedestrian Crossing for Safety

Orange Council

Works will begin on the construction of a raised pedestrian crossing in Kite Street, between Anson Street and Lords Place, on Sunday 18 May 2025.

♦ In short: A raised pedestrian crossing known as a Wombat Crossing, will replace the existing crossing in Kite Street, between Anson Street and Lords Place.

♦ The project is funded by Round 2 of the NSW Government's Towards Zero Safer Roads Program

♦ What's next: Kite Street will be closed at the pedestrian crossing for the works, which are expected to take about four weeks to complete.

The upgrade of the existing pedestrian crossing to a raised crossing, known as a Wombat Crossing, will increase pedestrian safety by slowing vehicles down as they approach the crossing.

Council's Infrastructure Policy Committee Chair Cr Jeff Whitton looked forward to seeing the work get underway.

"This upgrade is a very important part of improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists at such a busy crossing in the city's central business district," Cr Whitton said.

"The crossing is a key thoroughfare for people walking into the CBD from the south, as well as the Ophir car park and there have been numerous accidents and near misses there over the years."

The $151,000 project is funded by Round 2 of the NSW Government's Towards Zero Safer Roads Program and includes the construction of the raised crossing as well as new concrete blisters on each side of the road.

Work to remove the median strip on the western side of the crossing will begin on Sunday 18 May and traffic controllers will be in place to direct motorists.

From Monday 19 May, Kite Street will be closed at the pedestrian crossing and it will remain closed for the duration of the project. A temporary u-turn bay will be created to allow vehicles coming from Anson Street to turn around.

Motorists will still be able to access and exit the Orange City Centre car park as normal. While access to driveways will be maintained throughout the work, drivers may experience minor delays.

Kite Street will be closed to traffic coming from the east at the Lords Place roundabout. The Kite Street entrance to the Ophir Car Park will be closed and vehicles will be able to access and exit the car park from the Lords Place entrance.

On-street parking will be restricted in the areas surrounding the site while the work takes place, so Orange City Council will remove the fee for the Ophir Car Park to assist with parking during the project.

The project is expected to take four weeks to complete. Motorists are asked to slow down and follow the direction of traffic control when driving in the area.
