From August to December, koalas are on the move in search of mates and new territory.

Although usually solitary and spending most of their time in trees, during breeding season koalas become more active and mobile.

This is a high-risk time for local koala populations with increased likelihood of vehicle strikes and dog attacks.

"The breeding season is a critical time for koalas, and it's also when drivers need to be extra aware of wildlife on our roads," Jane Baldwin, Council's Koala Project Officer, said.

"As koalas move through the landscape looking for mates, they are more likely to cross roads, particularly during the evening and early morning hours."

"Vehicle activated signs are once again operating on Broken Head Road and Coolamon Scenic Drive to remind motorists that they are travelling through koala hotspots and to slow down and stay alert for wildlife, particularly during breeding season," Ms Baldwin said.

"We're fortunate to share our region with these iconic native marsupials, and we all have a role to play in helping keep them safe," she said.

People can report a sick or injured koala, 24 hours a day, to Friends of the Koala on 02 6622 1233.
