Racing in the Kimberley has received another boost through the Cook Labor Government's investment in regional racing infrastructure.
The Kununurra Race Club has secured $45,000 to support the installation of a new horse cooling stable and the addition of dedicated swab facilities, enhancing animal welfare and racing operations at the club.
The project is being delivered through the Cook Labor Government's $25.2 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund (RRIF), which is improving facilities at racing clubs across regional Western Australia.
Set alongside Lake Kununurra, the Kununurra Race Club offers one of the country's most unique racing experiences, with racegoers able to arrive by boat. Located on the Western Australia and Northern Territory border, the club attracts a distinctive mix of competitors and visitors from both jurisdictions.
The Kununurra upgrades form part of a broader program of improvements underway at 24 regional thoroughbred and harness racing venues across the State.
Earlier this month, the Broome Turf Club unveiled a new $250,000 fencing upgrade. The club is also set to benefit from improvements to toilet facilities, stables and jockey accommodation as part of a wider $2.6 million redevelopment.
Racing continues to play an important role in the Kimberley economy. Together, the racing clubs in Broome, Derby and Kununurra contribute to a regional industry worth around $22.9 million annually, forming part of the approximately $1.3 billion contribution the racing industry makes to Western Australia's economy each year.
The annual Kununurra Cup will be held on 29 August, showcasing the region's unique racing culture and attracting participants and visitors from across northern Australia.
As stated by Racing and Gaming Minister Don Punch:
"The Kununurra Cup continues to draw competitors and visitors from across Western Australia and beyond, making it an important event for the East Kimberley.
"This $45,000 investment will help protect the safety of horses, employees, jockeys and industry participants at the Kununurra Race Club.
"The racing industry contributes around $1.3 billion to Western Australia's economy and supports jobs, tourism and communities right across regional WA.
"The Cook Labor Government remains committed to investing in initiatives that strengthen the long-term future of the racing industry and the communities it supports."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"The Kununurra Race Club is an important part of our community, bringing people together and attracting visitors from across northern Australia while delivering real economic benefits for local businesses.
"These upgrades will enhance animal welfare, improve facilities for participants and help ensure the club can continue to host quality race days for locals and visitors for years to come."
