The Jacinta Allan Labor Government has slashed the number of grants awarded to youth crime prevention amid a crime crisis in Victoria.
Under Labor's watch, a crime is committed every 50 seconds, a serious assault every 30 minutes and a residential aggravated burglary almost every hour.
Labor awarded just two Youth Crime Prevention Program grants in the past two years despite record high youth crime.
The government has cut the funding to crime prevention programs run by 34 groups affiliated with the African community, when that community is demanding urgent support.
An elected Liberals and Nationals will establish programs to address crime prevention and rehabilitation as part of our $100m Safer Communities Plan.
Restart will be a Victorian-first residential responsibility and discipline program that provides a live-in program for serious and repeat offenders aged between 12 and 17 that provides a pathway out of crime through discipline, education, counselling, and community support
Youthstart will invest in proven community-based interventions such as Youth Justice Hubs, risk-based diversion, trauma-informed therapy, mentoring, and family-based case management..
Leader of the Opposition Brad Battin said: "Victorians are paying $20 million a day in interest on Labor's debt which is money Jacinta Allan is cutting from the police budget and youth crime prevention.
"We are in the grips of a crime crisis and Victorians don't feel safe in their own homes.
"The Premier needs to explain why her government is cutting funding for crime prevention programs.
"Labor can't manage money, can't manage crime and Victorians are paying the price.
"As an ex-cop, I know you can't just arrest your way out of a crime wave, that's why the Liberals and Nationals will invest in crime prevention and rehabilitation."
