Labor is backing the next generation of First Nations athletes - making it cheaper and easier to participate in sport.

In recognition of National Reconciliation Week, Minister Spence today launched a new round of grants to help Aboriginal teams and athletes.

The Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program provides funding to help cover uniforms, equipment, travel and participation in sport carnivals and tournaments.

Eligible individuals can access up to $250 to purchase uniforms and equipment and up to $750 for travel and accommodation expenses.

Grants of up to $1,000 are also available to cover team uniforms and sport equipment.

Funding up to $2,500 per junior team and $1,500 per senior team is also available to help cover travel and accommodation costs to participate in Aboriginal sporting carnivals and tournaments across Victoria or interstate.

Last year saw 54 successful applicants share in more than $146,000.

The Darebin Netball Association netted almost $2,300 towards new uniforms for their First Nations U17 junior girls and open women's senior players.

Ten junior basketball players from Broadmeadows based HC Dallas Phoenix Basketball Club also scored a $1,000 boost towards new uniforms and equipment.

Labor has invested more than $155 million to support participation in community sport programs through initiatives such as the Aboriginal Sport Participation Program.

Applications for funding are open until 11.59pm on 2 July 2026. For more information or to apply visit sport.vic.gov.au
