Labor will deliver defence certainty, security and jobs

A Shorten Labor Government will work with Army on the decision to acquire 30 self‑propelling howitzers to make sure it gets the capability it needs, when it needs it.

This election will be a choice between a united Shorten Labor Government, which will support Australian defence industry and get the capability our Australian Defence Force needs, or more of the Liberals' chaos.

We will seek Army's advice on this decision to make sure it meets its needs, not a desperate government's political need.

Once we have determined this capability is the right one for Australia, a Shorten Labor Government will proceed with the decision to build the capability in Geelong.

A Shorten Labor Government will meet the bipartisan commitment to lift defence spending to 2 per cent of GDP so the Australian Defence Force has the capabilities it needs to keep Australia safe.

A Shorten Labor Government will also:

  • Make sure local companies get a fair go at winning local defence contracts with our Defence Regional Procurement Policy.
  • Back our defence industry companies to export to the world with our support for Australian defence industry primes.

Labor goes to this election offering a considered plan for Australia's defence and defence industries.

The Liberals go to this election offering their fifth defence minister in as many years.

End the chaos. Vote for change. Vote for Labor.
