Labor's Unfunded Services Blowout Confirmed

Treasurer, Minister for Energy and Minister for Home Ownership The Honourable David Janetzki
  • The Crisafulli Government delivers billions of dollars for housing, child safety and health projects that Labor announced but never funded.
  • The Crisafulli Government can reveal another chapter in the story of Labor's reckless spending and fiscal vandalism.
  • Labor's unfunded services have contributed to a $5.7 billion overspend.
  • The Crisafulli Government is funding the services Labor did not and delivering a fresh start for Queensland.

The Crisafulli Government has revealed the true depths of the funding black holes left by the former Labor Government.

Today Treasurer David Janetzki introduced into Parliament the Appropriation (Supplementary 2024-2025) Bill 2025, as required by legislation, which formally approved unforeseen expenditure incurred as a result of Labor's underfunding.

The former Labor government's chronic underfunding of key services and projects, has led to a $5.7 billion overspend among government departments.

It follows Labor's near record overspend of $9 billion in 2023-24 in the year prior.

"The former Labor Government had completely lost control of the budget and had underfunded the services that Queenslanders rely on," Treasurer Janetzki said.

"The Crisafulli Government has significantly reduced unforeseen expenditure by billions, despite inheriting the deception of the former Labor Government and its funding black holes

"While unforeseen expenditure has been significantly reduced, this higher than usual level supplementary appropriation is a direct result of the deception of the former Labor Government.

"As we have repeatedly revealed during the last year, the former Labor government hid their project blowouts and underfunded essential frontline services.

"A significant driver of last year's unforeseen expenditure is the funding black holes left by the chaos and crisis of the former Labor Government, which this government has had to fill.

"Billions in housing and homelessness, child safety, and health services and projects needed to be funded by the new LNP Government, because Labor did not."

Treasurer Janetzki said the Crisafulli Government had already taken steps to improve the budget position.

"Labor's reckless budgetary management had Queensland's debt on track to reach $252 billion in 2028-29 – reduced to $205.7 billion in the Crisafulli Government's first budget," Treasurer Janetzki said.

"We have returned respect for Queenslanders' money as a fundamental principle guiding the Crisafulli Government, and we are calmly and methodically cleaning up the mess of Labor's fiscal legacy of debt, deficit and deception."
