Last chance to register for Victoria River Research Station field day

NT Government

Would-be attendees at the upcoming Victoria River Research Station (VRRS) field day are being reminded there are only a few days left to register their attendance.

The event is aimed at Northern Territory beef producers and pastoral industry stakeholders, and is held by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade, in conjunction with Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and supported by the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association (NTCA).

The field day and BeefUp Forum will be held on Tuesday, 26 July and Wednesday, 27 July at the VRRS site, also known as Kidman Springs.

Attendees will have the opportunity to network with expert speakers and learn more about recent research outcomes, developing issues and opportunities within the industry, including:

o Cattle, carbon & country

o Pasture management

o Research and market updates

o Paddock tour

o Biosecurity and new animal disease threat assessment

This important industry event aims to address the growing interest surrounding carbon management, pastures and rangeland management, the ever-changing market and future ramifications and diversification of the northern Australia beef cattle production systems.

The department takes biosecurity measures very seriously. There will be onsite biosecurity measures in place for this event. Part of the registration process will require attendees to declare if they have been overseas recently. If they have been overseas in the 7 days prior to attend this event, they will not be able to attend. A wash bay is available for attendees coming from outside the region to wash their vehicles down. A foot wash will be placed at the office and all visitors must sign in on entry.

There is still an opportunity for suppliers to hold trade stalls at the event. Interested stallholders should contact the Department of Industry, Tourism & Trade's Livestock Extension Officer, Stacey Holzapfel, before Friday 22 July at [email protected].

For a copy of the full program and to register to attend, visit www.mla.com.au//beefup, or contact Rosie Pease, MLA BeefUp Forum Coordinator on (08) 8942 3388 by Friday 22 July 2022.

Quote from Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade's Deputy CEO - Agriculture, Fisheries, Biosecurity, Luke Bowen:

"The Territory's beef cattle industry is a vital part of our local economy and Australia's economy, and the department is working to support this.

"This event is a great opportunity for producers to get a biosecurity update from the department, including what preparedness and response measures are currently in place for a range of threats, including lumpy skin disease and foot-and-mouth disease.

"The sector is a significant contributor to our regional communities, and this event provides an opportunity to undertake tours of the station, explore the latest research and take part in networking opportunities.

"Staff from the department are looking forward to promoting the latest research for the industry, as well as opportunities for the region's beef cattle industry. Calf loss mitigation projects, selective breeding programs and rangelands research will all be discussed by the department's experts.

"The department is looking forward to partnering with the NTCA and Meat and Livestock Australia as part of the field day program to assist the industry's growth."
