Latent capacity fishing licence monitoring update

In 2015 Defra carried out an exercise to address latent capacity in the under 10m English fishing fleet.

A number of fishermen had their finfish licence capped at 350kgs and/or had their shellfish permit temporarily suspended. Where Licence and permit holders were unable to demonstrate they had been catching quota or shellfish in necessary quantities as appropriate, they were subject to a monitoring period. During this period they were required to demonstrate evidence that fishing activity was above the capping/suspension limits. Those that did so at the end of this monitoring period would have their licences and/or permits fully re-instated.

The monitoring period has now come to an end for all licences and permits.

The MMO will be notifying all licence/permit holders individually on the outcome of this monitoring period in due course.
