Leeton has once again been recognised among the state's leading regional communities, with local projects, volunteers and community initiatives earning top honours at the 2026 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns Awards.
Mayor George Weston and Deputy Mayor Michael Kidd represented Leeton Shire Council at the prestigious awards ceremony in Orange over the weekend, where Leeton was named the Overall Winner in the population category of 5,001 to 12,000 residents.
The overall title recognises the community's commitment to innovation, sustainability, liveability and civic pride, reflecting the collective efforts of Council, community groups, volunteers and residents.
In addition to the overall award, Leeton received category wins for:
- Liveable Towns - Chelmsford Town Square Upgrade & Activation
- Communication & Engagement - FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) Program
- Local Heroes (Joint Winner) - Roxy Volunteer Dream Team
Leeton was also awarded Highly Commended recognition for:
- Heritage and Culture - Roxy Community Theatre Refurbishment
- Waterways & Marine Protection - Water Network Management - Digital Twin Technology
Deputy Mayor Michael Kidd said the awards were a testament to the dedication of Council staff, volunteers and community members who work tirelessly to make Leeton a vibrant and thriving place to live.
"These awards belong to our whole community," he said.
"Council can set the direction and invest in important projects, but it is our staff, volunteers, community groups and residents who help bring those projects to life and ensure they continue to deliver lasting benefits."
"From major infrastructure projects and environmental initiatives through to community engagement programs and the countless volunteer hours contributed across our Shire, these awards recognise the passion and pride people have in Leeton."
Cr Kidd also acknowledged the efforts of those involved in preparing the award submissions and hosting judges during the assessment process.
"Special recognition should also go to the many people behind the scenes who keep these projects running successfully long after the ribbon-cutting ceremonies are over. Sustained commitment and high-quality delivery are what make achievements like these possible."
Cr Weston said the recognition was a source of pride for the entire community.
"Being named the overall winner in our population category is a terrific achievement and highlights the outstanding commitment of the community across our Shire," Cr Weston said.
"These awards showcase what can be achieved when Council, volunteers, businesses and residents work together towards a shared vision for our community."
The awards were presented at a gala ceremony in Orange attended by local government representatives, community leaders and distinguished guests from across New South Wales.
The recognition reinforces Leeton's reputation as a community that embraces innovation, celebrates its heritage, values its volunteers and continues to invest in initiatives that enhance quality of life for current and future generations.
