Leeton Shire Council is excited to join in on the Local Government Week 2026 celebrations, running from Monday 3 August to Sunday 9 August, with the aim to move the conversation beyond roads, rates and rubbish, to the important and far-reaching role councils play as the hubs of their community.
One of the key events during the week is a special Local Government themed Storytime Session at the Leeton Shire Library on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, from 10.30am to 11.30am. This family-friendly event will include stories read by Mayor Cr George Weston and Council staff. Kids and parents/carers will then have the popular annual opportunity to explore some of Council's machinery (such as tractors, excavators and trucks), which will be situated in the carpark behind the library.
Mayor Weston said Local Government Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the diverse and extensive services and facilities Council provides to the community.
"In addition to managing roads and waste, Council is responsible for pools, parks, playgrounds, libraries, local events, cemeteries, childcare centres, food safety checks, building and development, pet registrations, economic development, and much more."
To further celebrate Local Government Week, Council will run a social media campaign highlighting interesting facts and statistics about Council, achievements, key services, and staff spotlights.
