The ACT Government is inviting Canberrans to have their say on the future of aquatic facilities across the city, with consultation now open to inform the development of the ACT Aquatic Strategy.
The ACT Aquatic Strategy will provide a long-term framework to guide planning and investment across Canberra's aquatic network, ensuring decisions are informed by evidence, community feedback and future demand.
Aquatic facilities play a vital role in community life, supporting recreation, health and wellbeing, rehabilitation, social connection, learn-to-swim programs and organised sport. The Strategy will help balance these needs while supporting affordability and long-term sustainability.
The consultation follows community research undertaken earlier this year, with more than 1,550 Canberrans sharing their views through the ACT Aquatic Strategy YourSay Panel survey.
The research found indoor aquatic facilities are the most widely used aquatic venues in Canberra, with 59 per cent of respondents visiting an indoor pool in the past year. Aquatic facilities were also recognised as important places for health, wellbeing and social connection, with swimming, exercise, relaxation and recreation identified as the main reasons people visit.
The survey also highlighted the importance of public aquatic facilities across the community, with 71 per cent of respondents participating in casual swimming and recreation and 45 per cent using facilities for lap swimming.
The ACT Government is encouraging all Canberrans to share their feedback on priorities and identify any gaps in the existing aquatic network.
Community consultation is now open and closes on 18 December 2026.
Key stakeholder groups, including aquatic sports, swim schools, facility operators and community organisations, will also have the opportunity to contribute through dedicated stakeholder meetings following the appointment of a consultant to lead development of the strategy.
