Wollongong City Council's ongoing commitment to improving flood resilience in our communities continues, with the construction of flood mitigation levees along Whartons Creek at Franklin Avenue and Spinners Way, Bulli now underway.
The works started on 28 September and will continue for approximately six months, subject to weather conditions. The construction of three levees aims to increase the capacity of the creek system to reduce to reduce the extent and impacts of flooding on nearby residential areas and schools.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said Council regularly reviews its key floodplain management documents and strategies to ensure works carried out to improve flood resilience are effective and based on up-to-date flood modelling and data.
"Our community is well aware of the impacts flooding can have on homes and businesses, especially following the major flood event we endured in 2024. Those impacts were certainly felt in our northern suburbs," Cr Brown said.
"We have now completed more than 70 per cent of required recovery works identified in the wake of that event, butour city's ongoing vulnerability to flooding means we must continue investing in the long-term flood resilience of our communities with projects like this.
"These works are underpinned by detailed floodplain management studies that we regularly update and review to make sure projects we identify and carry out can equip our flood mitigation infrastructure to handle issues that arise in a particular catchment.
"In addition to identified works and projects, these studies and plans also incorporate valuable community education initiatives. Less than half the creeks in the Wollongong LGA are located on public land, so we need to work with landowners and residents to continue building flood resistance and minimising flood risk in our local communities.
"It's pleasing to see these important works are underway, and we will continue working with the community to minimise flood risk and the impacts of flooding on homes, businesses and our important public infrastructure."
Motorists and pedestrians using Spinners Way may experience slight delays and temporary disruptions while construction activities are underway, though access will remain available for businesses and local residents throughout the works.
The public car park adjacent to Spinners Way will also remain closed for the duration of the works to facilitate construction activities. We appreciate the patience of our community as we carry out these essential flood mitigation works.
