Leeton Shire Council is calling on community members to help shape the future of reconciliation in Leeton Shire through the development of its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP will provide a roadmap for how Council can continue to strengthen relationships, respect and opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our community.
To ensure the plan reflects local voices and priorities, Council is seeking feedback from residents, community groups, businesses and organisations through a community survey, which is now open and closes on Monday 31 August 2026. The survey will ask people what reconciliation means to them, what Council is doing well, and what actions they would like to see included in the RAP.
Manager of Community Development, Sarah Stewart, said the RAP is an opportunity for the whole community to contribute to a shared vision for reconciliation.
"Reconciliation is everyone's journey. We want to hear from people right across the Shire about what matters to them and how we can work together to build a more inclusive, respectful and connected community."
"Whether you've lived here your whole life or you've recently made Leeton your home, your experiences and ideas can help shape a plan that reflects our community's values and aspirations for the future."
The survey is just one part of the consultation process. During July and August, Council will also host a series of face-to-face community conversations, providing opportunities for people to come together, share their perspectives and contribute directly to the development of the RAP. Dates and locations for these sessions are as follows:
- Wednesday, 29 July 2026, 10am-12pm: Whitton Community Hall
- Wednesday, 29 July 2026, 2pm-4pm: Yanco Community Hall
- Wednesday, 5 August 2026, 10am-1pm: Leeton and District Local Aboriginal Land Council
Community members can complete the survey online via Council's 'Have Your Say' online portal or pick up a hard copy from Council's Administration Building, Leeton Shire Library, Yanco Shop, and Whitton and Murrami Post Offices (note: the hard copies will be available from Monday 27 July 2026).
Council acknowledges the Wiradjuri people as the Traditional Custodians of the land and is committed to listening and working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Elders, community organisations and the broader community throughout the development of the RAP.
