After years of struggle to secure the funds to save Sydney's favourite suburban ground, the final designs for the upgrade of Sydney's iconic Leichhardt Oval are now on public exhibition.

The plans are being exhibited by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure as part of the state significant development application for the renovation of the ground.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne is calling on sports fans to make a submission before the close of submissions on 12 February.

The upgrade will transform the "Eighth Wonder of the World" into a modern hub for men and women's elite and community sport across several codes.

With the Wests Tigers locked in to play both men's and women's NRL games at the ground for the next 15 years, this upgrade will see players and fans experience the unrivalled atmosphere while enjoying the comfort of modern amenities.

Planned improvements include:

  • Renovation of the historic western grandstand with new stadium seating
  • Replacement of all seating throughout the ground with modern stadium seating
  • Modern hospitality and media facilities
  • Four NRL-compliant female-friendly change rooms
  • A new northern grandstand and replacement of the lower seating bowl with a new 1,500 seat stand.

Construction is due to commence after the 2026 season, with works to be completed ahead of kick-off for the 2028 season.

The community exhibition is open from Friday 16 January 2026 until Thursday 12 February 2026. To have your say on the Leichhardt Oval refurbishment, visit the NSW Planning Portal.

"After years of fighting to save Leichhardt Oval our plans for the much-needed renovation are progressing well."

"The final plans are now on public exhibition and I encourage all Wests Tigers and sports fans to make a submission to help us secure the future of the Eighth Wonder of the World. This is their chance to save our beloved ground."
