Liberals must make sanitary items available to all Tasmanian students

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government policy could be expanded to all Tasmanian students
  • Catholic schools sector misses out despite having one fifth of state's student numbers
  • Labor supports move to provide items free of charge
  • Labor Member for Lyons Jen Butler and Labor Member for Clark Ella Haddad have urged the Gutwein Government to extend its plan to provide free sanity items to all students in state schools and in the Catholic Schools sector.

The free sanitary products program should be extended to include all state school students - not just those on lower incomes.

And with 18,000 students enrolled in Catholic schools making up 20 per cent of Tasmania's entire student population, it's important all girls be given the same opportunity to access free sanitary products.

Labor welcomes and supports the government's move to make sanitary items free to girls in government schools from term three this year but it's only fair all students are included.

Up to 60 per cent of students enrolled in Catholic schools come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and face the same barriers to learning as kids in state schools.

Many students face a struggle to buy these items and that should not get in the way of attending school and learning. Catholic Education Tasmania will be writing to the Premier to highlight this oversight and the Premier is urged to take action.
