A Liberal and Nationals Government will require councils to provide Victorian households with a weekly general rubbish collection.
Under Labor, more than 30 councils across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria have cut back their general rubbish collection to fortnightly - another example of how Victorians are paying more, but getting less.
Fortnightly collections are hugely inconvenient for larger families, households with young children, apartment residents, and people managing nappies and incontinence products.
This is an essential service, and Victorians should be able to rely on it every week.
Labor has tripled the landfill levy, resulting in significant increases to council waste charges which are not subject to the rate cap. This is placing unnecessary cost pressures on households and resulting in huge increases in illegal dumping.
An incoming Liberal and Nationals Government will review the rate of the landfill levy alongside our previously announced review of the container deposit scheme. We will also apply the rates cap to council waste charges.
Leader of the Opposition, Jess Wilson, said: "Under a Government I lead, your red bin will be collected every single week.
"This is a commonsense change that makes life easier for families. Households shouldn't have to wait a fortnight for their over-flowing bin to be collected.
"Weekly rubbish collection is an essential service that shouldn't depend on your postcode."
Shadow Minister for Local Government, Bev McArthur, said: "Victorians keep getting hit with increased rates notices as Labor has massively increased the landfill levy during a cost-of-living crisis."
Shadow Minister for the Environment, Nick McGowan, said: "Picking up rubbish weekly will help prevent the contamination of household yellow-lid recycling bins, and that's environmentally important for a greener future."
