Liberals’ Neglect of Grassroots Sports Infrastructure Unacceptable

Tasmanian Labor

Shadow Sports Minister Josh Willie today said the Liberal government had broken promises to provide key grass roots sporting infrastructure.

Originally the Liberals announced in 2018 that they would build a new multi court stadium in the Northern suburbs.

Then they announced with great fanfare in September 2020, they would build a new four court indoor stadium beside the Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) and that it would be up and running by 2022.

They said construction would start in September 2021 and be complete by July 2022.

Nothing has happened.

Minister Nic Street also announced in March 2022 that consultation was open for a State Sporting Infrastructure Plan and that consultation would end in April 2022.

Again, nothing has happened.

Meanwhile our grass roots sporting participants like Riley Causby from the Glenorchy Basketball Club continue to play in infrastructure that is ageing and crumbling like the Moonah Indoor Sports Centre and the indoor centre in Rosny.

This is a government that breaks promises and has its priorities all wrong.

There has been no action on the new indoor sports centre beside the DEC or the State Sporting Infrastructure Plan yet the government has no hesitation in committing $460 million for a football stadium at Macquarie Point that we don’t need.

This is a government that makes a lot of announcements but delivers precious little.
