Liberals refuse to cap power prices again

Tasmanian Labor

Power prices have been forecast to go up by 75 per cent over two years, putting more pressure on the State Liberal Government to take real action.

Tasmanian Labor recently flagged the potential for a 35 per cent increase in power prices next year, with the hapless Energy Minister Guy Barnett labelling us as 'scaremongers.'

Now it appears the outlook is even worse than predicted. Jeremy Rockliff and Guy Barnett cannot continue to bury their heads in the sand.

The Government must now commit to capping power prices for next financial year. This year's decision not to cap prices cost an average $227 per household and will cost more next year if nothing is done.

Our 100 years of investment in Hydro was made so that Tasmanians could pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power. That is what they expect.

The Liberals broke their promise to de-link from the National Electricity Market and now every Tasmanian is paying the price.

It is time the Liberal Government did the right thing and protected Tasmanians from these disastrous price rises.
