Liberals remain in denial over jobs crisis

  • Unemployment rate 20 percent above the national rate
  • Government failing to accept reality of jobs crisis
  • Will Hodgman is failing to accept the reality of the state's worsening jobs crisis.

ABS data released today shows 5,600 full time jobs have been lost in Tasmania in the past 12 months, with the state's unemployment rate 20 percent above the national rate.

Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Jobs and ICT, Michelle O'Byrne, said Will Hodgman must stop denying he has a problem.

"Will Hodgman promised before the last election to deliver the lowest jobless rate in the country, but what we are seeing are jobs being destroyed.

"In the past month alone 600 more young Tasmanians have become unemployed. Meanwhile the number of people not getting the hours they need continues to rise to well over 10 percent of the workforce.

"The Liberals have blown Tasmania's Budget and their only plan to fix it is to cut $450 million in jobs and essential services.

"Will Hodgman must stop denying he has a problem, come clean on his budget mismanagement and explain how he plans to fix the state's appalling jobs figures."
