Libraries' summer program out today: Bega Valley

Summer is almost here, and Bega Valley Shire Council's libraries have a program full of great activities lined up for the holidays.

Activities include the Summer Reading Club for kids, children's art, literacy and STEM activities, author events and an online Indyreads Summer Book Club for all ages.

"The always popular kids' Summer Reading Club is on at all our libraries, from 1 December to 31 January 2022," Council's Library Services Coordinator, Megan Jordan-Jones said.

"In keeping with this year's theme - Uncover and Discover - young people need to read five books to uncover a secret code to book tickets to a free movie screening of Scoob in the library. And if you read more than five books, there are more prizes on offer."

Ms Jordan-Jones said research shows many children experience a 'summer slide' when they take a break from their daily educational activities and school routines.

"Our Summer Reading Club helps combat the 'summer slide' as it's designed to connect children and families to activities specifically developed to encourage and nurture a love of literature and recreational reading," she said.

"Our reading programs are all about encouraging children and adults to discover great authors, wonderful tales and develop a love reading.

"The Book Bingo Challenge for adults will be run again this year and we are looking forward to seeing lots of grown-ups compete for a wonderful prize of a dinner for two at a restaurant of their choice.

"Author events on our summer program include children's author, Toni Cary previewing her latest book Fantazma's Dream, and Greg Bartlett and John Hughes will speak about their new books at two separate events.

"Other activities include ancestry workshops for adults, a children's poetry writing workshop with poet Kai Jensen and lessons in tool sharpening with the Bega Repair Café crew."

Pick up a summer program brochure from any one of our libraries or read all the details on the Bega Valley Shire Library website. Event bookings can be made online or by calling the Bega Valley Shire Library on (02) 6499 2127.
