Library Recovery Stations Turn Trash Into Treasure

A Melbourne-based social enterprise is giving discarded household items a second life — keeping them out of landfill and back in the hands of the community.

Green Collect, one of Australia's leading social enterprises, operates out of a Melbourne warehouse where every donated item is hand-sorted. Items such as scratched CDs and DVDs in unwatchable condition, cases and VHS tapes are sorted by material type, before being sent to specialist recyclers to be remanufactured into new products. Cables are tested and sorted for reuse.

Green Collect provides meaningful employment to people facing significant barriers to work, and work in partnership with local councils to deliver circular economy outcomes. Mornington Peninsula residents can join the recycling movement: recovery stations are available at our libraries across the Peninsula, where anyone can drop off eligible items free of charge.

With the right systems in place, such as our recycling cabinets, everyday items can be diverted from landfill and re-enter the community — creating environmental and social value at the same time.
