Light Up Lancaster Explore Week Invites Public to Join Art Events

Lancaster

Light, art and science are at the forefront of this year's Explore Week as Lancaster University takes part for another year, delivering five days of free workshops throughout October half term.

Festivalgoers will be challenged to build and drive mini solar-powered Lego cars; 'Spot the bot' to test their ability to tell the difference between AI from real-life; discover weird and wonderful Lancashire dialects; and influence tarot cards.

Other Lancaster University workshops include Chinese shadow puppet papercutting, hosted by LU's Confucius Institute, hands-on anatomy activities and a 'Seaside Cinema', showcasing Morecambe's cinema history.

These activities - held at the Storey Institute - form part of the wider Explore Week timetable delivered by Light Up Lancaster, in partnership with the University's Impact Acceleration Account programme and engagement team.

It offers a chance to meet artists, researchers and makers, get creative together and uncover some of the ideas that inspire Light Up Lancaster's artworks and installations.

Light Up Lancaster runs from 5 to 7 November in the city with three nights of creative light installations and interactive artworks across the theme 'No Boundaries', encouraging audiences to discover new connections, cross borders and 'celebrate the things that bring us together'.

Families are invited to get involved with the new Fun Zones, giving children and young people the chance to be a part of the art through their input and interaction.

Lancaster University is one of a number of sponsors of the festival, which is calling on the community to donate to its Spacehive campaign to help develop participatory fun zones that necessitate direct involvement to generate constantly changing light art.

Explore Week will take place in The Storey from 26 to 30 October, with Light Up Lancaster taking over the city from 5 to 7 November. All installations are free to view and suitable for families, and they will run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm until 10pm.
