The Lighthouse Beach lifeguard tower has undergone a major renewal over winter, with the upgraded facility now ready for the warmer months ahead.
The works included replacing the tower's subfloor structure and flooring, renewing the roof sheets and supporting structure, and repainting the interior and exterior.
Given the tower's exposed coastal location, durability was an important consideration in the renewal. The new subfloor has been constructed entirely from aluminium, providing a more durable structure designed to withstand the harsh coastal environment.
Port Macquarie Hastings Council Group Manager Liveable Communities Lucilla Marshall said completing the works during winter was a practical way to carry out the renewal while minimising disruption for beach users.
"These towers are exposed to some pretty tough coastal conditions, so making sure they're well maintained and built to last is important. Completing the work over winter also means the tower is ready for the warmer months, when our beaches are at their busiest."
The renewal follows similar works completed at the North Haven Beach lifeguard tower last year, helping maintain important lifeguard facilities across the region.
"Maintaining and renewing essential public assets such as this is an important part of Council's fundamental responsibility," Mayor Adam Roberts said.
"We know the love our residents and visiting community has for our beaches, so ensuring their safety is maintained is paramount.
"By investing in the maintenance of these towers, we can extend their life and ensure they remain fit for purpose by continuing to provide an important service for our lifeguards."
The works were funded by Port Macquarie Hastings Council.
