Northern Tasmania's tallest Christmas tree will be illuminated in front of an expected crowd of thousands at the City of Launceston's Lighting of the Tree event on Saturday, November 29.
For the first time, the popular event will be held on a Saturday evening to better suit Northern Tasmanian families.
The City of Launceston's Lighting of the Tree will take place in the Brisbane Street Mall on Saturday, 29 November, with the spectacular illumination of the city's 10-metre Christmas tree set for approximately 8.30pm.
This year's event promises a magical night of live music, face painting, festive cheer and a very special visit from Santa Claus, officially launching the Christmas season in Launceston.
The program includes a special interactive 'Choir in the Mall' performance led by Launceston's very own Travis Hennessy, of the much-loved Launceston Choir in the Pub.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said that families across the North have said that they wanted more space, more time, and a chance to really soak up the atmosphere.
"Moving to a Saturday night lets us do exactly that," Mayor Garwood said.
"Opening up the mall and The Avenue to create a more accessible, relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone.
"We want to light up the city with festive spirit and bring people together for one of Launceston's favourite free community events. I can't wait to see the mall absolutely pumping with families, kids, music and Christmas excitement."
Work on installing the City of Launceston's Christmas Tree and other decorations across the city will get underway this week.
Launceston's Christmas festivities will culminate with the family favourite Carols in the Park event in Launceston's majestic City Park on Sunday, December 21.
