Like Father, Like Son In Thomastown

State Highway Patrol North officers discovered a new definition for the father-son rule when they impounded two vehicles in Thomastown last night.

Police caught sight of a silver Hyundai i40 driving at speed on the Metropolitan Ring Road about 8.25pm.

The Hyundai was clocked travelling at an alleged speed of 138km/h in a 100km/h zone with three mates on board.

Officers intercepted the vehicle and it is alleged the driver, a 17-year-old boy, produced a fraudulent Victorian learner permit.

The Hyundai was impounded at a cost of $928.

The boy called his father to collect him and when dad arrived officers established his driver licence was suspended.

The man's green Toyota Corolla was impounded at a cost of $928.

A 17-year-old boy and a 42-year-old man, both from the Manningham area, are expected to be charged on summons for driving offences.

This comes as Victoria Police launches Operation Furlong, a statewide road policing operation taking place over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Motorists can expect to see police highly visible and enforcing across the state's roads in an effort to reduce road trauma.

There will be a significant focus on major roads heading to areas in regional Victoria, with police on the lookout for speeding and distraction offences.

Motorists should expect to be tested anywhere, any time for alcohol and drugs, with significant penalties in place for those caught driving while impaired.

Operation Furlong commences at 12:01am on Friday 31 October and concludes at 11:59pm on Tuesday 4 November.
