Lithgow St. & Patterson Rd. Upgrades Done in Beveridge

Safety and traffic flow improvements have been completed in Beveridge, with the new interim roundabout at Lithgow Street and Patterson Road and a raised pedestrian crossing near the Greater Beveridge Community Centre, now open to the community.

The upgrades are designed to improve traffic movement and make it safer for pedestrians - particularly families accessing the community centre and nearby early learning facility.

The works have also introduced new traffic islands, improved line marking and safer on-street parking.

The project was made possible thanks to support from the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Council thanks residents and road users for their patience while these important upgrades were completed.

The interim roundabout at the Lithgow Street and Patterson Road intersection is a temporary solution to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.

The next stage of works will deliver a signalised intersection to accommodate longer-term growth. Council aims to have these works completed by 2029. However, with an estimated cost of $6.9 million, they will require support from the State and Federal Governments.

Earlier this year, developer Stockland installed interim traffic lights at the intersection of Lithgow Street and the Old Hume Highway/Hume Freeway on-ramp to improve safety and manage increasing traffic volumes. This was done with the support of the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and Council.

Recent traffic data shows a noticeable improvement in morning travel times since the lights were installed.

Between October 2024 and August 2025, eastbound travel times between Patterson Road and the Old Hume Highway during the morning peak dropped by more than 50 per cent, reducing average delays from around 16 minutes to just over seven minutes.

All other average travel times between Patterson Road and the Old Hume Highway are now under five minutes, with westbound movements typically taking less than three minutes during peak periods.

The improvement highlights the benefits of the interim lights in easing congestion and supporting smoother traffic movement through Beveridge's growing transport corridor.

Beyond local road upgrades, Council continues to advocate for the Victorian Government to deliver the Camerons Lane Interchange upgrade.

Planning and development work is already underway, including traffic modelling, environmental and site investigations, to inform design options, scope and cost. The business case and planning study for the interchange (and supporting upgrades along Minton Street and Beveridge Road) are expected to be completed in 2025.

This project is essential to unlocking future urban development and easing congestion across the growing Beveridge corridor.

The next stage of Beveridge's growth is also taking shape, with works underway on a new retail precinct at the eastern corner of Lithgow Street and Mallaig Drive.

The development, known as Beveridge Village, will feature 14 retail shops, a childcare facility and a small supermarket, providing residents with more local services closer to home. The site is expected to open in mid-2026.

On the western side of Camerons Lane and Patterson Road, a new Coles supermarket is also under construction, with the opening planned for late 2026.

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said Beveridge residents have been feeling the impacts of rapid growth.

"More people, more cars and more development have created real challenges for traffic and infrastructure," he said.

"These works are one step towards easing those pressures, but there's still a lot more to do.

"Council is working closely with the State and Federal Governments to deliver the upgrades and long-term planning this community needs.

"We appreciate people's patience as we push for these improvements. Every project we complete helps build a safer and more connected Beveridge."
