Local Scholarships Boost Future Leaders

Now in its 17th year, the program provides $2,000 scholarships, generously funded by local businesses, to students from the Port Stephens local government area commencing their first year of tertiary study.

Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said the scholarship program invests in the potential of local young people while strengthening the region's future.

"Every student's journey starts with ambition, determination and potential and the Mayoral Academic Scholarship Program helps local students take the next step towards achieving their academic and career goals," Mayor Anderson said.

"Starting university or TAFE is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring significant costs. Whether it's purchasing textbooks, a laptop, equipment or contributing towards accommodation, these scholarships provide practical support when students need it most.

"Since 2010, our Mayoral Academic Scholarship Program has supported more than 200 Port Stephens students on their journey into higher education. I'm incredibly grateful to the local businesses that continue to invest in the best and brightest young people in our community year after year. Their generosity is helping shape the next generation of leaders, professionals and skilled workers who will contribute to the future of Port Stephens," Mayor Anderson added.

The Mayoral Academic Scholarship Program aligns with Council's Economic Development Strategy by supporting workforce development, encouraging lifelong learning and creating opportunities for students to build meaningful connections with local employers.

Eligible students must live in the Port Stephens local government area and be commencing their first full year of a Diploma or higher qualification at an accredited TAFE or university.

Applications are open from Tuesday 21 July until Friday 27 November 2026.
