Logan Art Gallery to showcase young artists' works

Woodridge State School Year 12 students Taiana Chan Boon (left) and Re Na Robin will be exhibiting their artworks for the first time at the Logan Art Gallery as part of Artwaves 2019 which opens on Friday night.

The works of Logan's future artists will be showcased at Logan Art Gallery from Friday (September 13) for a special exhibition – just in time for the school holidays.

Now in its 27th year, the annual Artwaves will bring together 29 different schools and 274 students for a major exhibition of artworks by secondary school students from the City of Logan and adjacent areas.

Artwaves is taking over the entire Logan Art Gallery between September 13 and October 19.

The annual exhibition recognises, promotes and celebrates the creative excellence of young artists in the region.

It also acknowledges the important contribution made by teachers and parents in nurturing student creativity.

Artworks have been selected by Artwaves 2019 Committee comprising Logan Art Gallery staff and Visual Art teachers from participating schools.

They have been created by students from grade 7 to grade 12 including Woodridge State High School Year 12 students Taiana Chan Boon and Re Na Robin.

Artwaves 2019 will be the first time both students have exhibited their works in an art gallery.

Re Na has produced an eye-catching full-sized dress made from recycled materials such as tape, plastic spoons, newspapers, cardboard and cling wrap which she has titled Lady Armour.

The Logan Central resident produced the artwork for a wearable art assignment at school earlier in the year to draw attention to pollution and create awareness about recycling.

Taiana said she had taken three weeks to create her portrait of one of her favourite singers Kehlani Parrish.

She produced the acrylic on board painting for a school project on the theme "devotion" to reflect her personal interest in music.

The participating schools are Beaudesert State High School, Beenleigh State High School, Browns Plains State High School, Calamvale Community College, Canterbury College, Flagstone Community College, Groves Christian College, Hills International College, Kimberley College, Kingston College, Loganlea State High School, Mabel Park State High School, Marsden State High School, Ormeau Woods State High School, Park Ridge State High School, Parklands Christian College , Redeemer Lutheran College, Rivermount College, Rochedale State High School, Runcorn State High School, Shailer Park State High School, Springwood State High School, St Francis College, St Thomas More College, Stretton State College, Sunnybank State High School, Trinity College, Windaroo Valley State High School and Woodridge State High School.
