Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Fest Returns This Month

From secret gardens to family recipes, to cultural storytelling and ghost stories, discover the rich heritage of Boorloo (Perth) this April as the City of Perth presents the Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Festival.

Running throughout April, the festival features more than 100 events and activities celebrating Perth's unique mix of historical and cultural stories, sites and communities. With many free experiences on offer, it's the perfect festival for families, history lovers and fun-seekers of all ages.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the jam-packed program offered something for everyone.

"The City and our neighbourhoods will come alive this April with more than 100 events and activities dedicated to sharing our unique stories. There is something for everyone to see, do and learn," Mr Reynolds said.

"This year we proudly celebrate significant milestones, including 180 years of Mercedes College and the remarkable 190-year history of the Old Court House Law Museum, adding even more depth to the program."

"Music lovers can also explore Boorloo's vibrant cultural history at the City of Perth Library, which will host a series of talks celebrating the social history of the music that shaped the City - from pub rock to punk.

"Spanning the 1950s through to the 1990s, local music legends will share stories about how Perth's music scene evolved and the artists and venues that helped shape it."

The festival will also celebrate the City's beloved parks and gardens through Moments in the Park - a series of events and activations across Harold Boas Gardens, Stirling Gardens, Russell Square, Moort-ak Waadiny (Wellington Square), Queens Gardens and Victoria Gardens.

"Visitors can learn about the history of these special places while enjoying theatre performances from Theatre 180, live music, workshops and storytelling. Bring a picnic rug and relax under the shade of these beautiful parks, with coffee and ice cream available on site," Mr Reynolds said.

Nearly all events are free, making it a great opportunity for families to enjoy a City 'staycation' during the school holidays. Visitors are encouraged to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

"The diverse program reflects the diversity of our City. My top picks include Memento, where TAFE students have partnered with the Royal Western Australian Historical Society to reimagine WA history through fashion, an Open House at the ABC studios and the Pioneering Spaces exhibition at Gallery Central.

With thanks to our major supporter Lotterywest and media partner ABC Radio Perth, the festival provides a fantastic opportunity for people to visit the City and discover more about its rich heritage.
