Macquarie Uni Staff to Fight Job Cuts

A mass meeting of staff at Macquarie University today unanimously voted to oppose job cuts and the closure of the Faculty of Human Sciences that were approved by the University Council last week.

Over 250 staff attended the packed meeting, with many more turned away because of a lack of room.

Damien Cahill, Assistant Secretary of the NSW National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) says:

"Macquarie Uni staff are angry that they are being forced to pay for managerial incompetence and skewed priorities of the University leadership.

"Staff were recently reassured that Macquarie Uni's finances were sound. To now be told of an alleged budget emergency beggars belief."

Nikki Balnave, NTEU Macquarie University Branch President says:

"We call on Vice-Chancellor Bruce Dowton to stop the cuts and closures and work with staff to find an alternative that is in the interests of all university staff and students."
