Council recently voted to join the Cities Power Partnerships, an initiative of the Australian Climate Council that seeks to celebrate and accelerate green energy and the sustainability of Australian towns and cities.

The Hunter is the first region in Australia with all councils signed up.

The program was created to have partners working together on climate change solutions, including energy management, emissions reduction, resilience and adaption.

Council is also currently working on an Energy Plan to deliver energy efficiency and renewable energy projects at Council facilities in the future.

Council's Manager Environment & Sustainability Catherine Pepper said 'joining the Cities Power Partnership is one way Council is walking the talk on environmental sustainability. We are looking forward to networking and collaborating with Councils across Australia on this issue and applying our learnings in our Energy Plan and Environmental Sustainability Strategy'.

The decision comes in time for Earth Hour being held this Saturday 27 March from 8.30pm, an initiative that encourages communities around the world to switch their power off or to a more renewable source to raise awareness about energy consumption and its impact on the environment.

Mrs Pepper says 'anything our community and business sectors can do to reduce their carbon footprint will be worthwhile. Everyday changes to reduce energy usage shows your support for our environment'.
