All six lanes of traffic are open and flowing along the full 11-kilometre stretch of the jointly funded, $662.5 million upgrade, to which the Australian Government committed $530 million.
As part of the project, 10 new higher, wider and safer bridges were delivered to improve flood immunity, helping to keep the Bruce Highway open during significant wet weather events. This was put to the test during heavy rainfall in February 2024, which could have closed the highway at King Johns Creek if the new structure at this location had not been built.
The project is expected to:
- Reduce travel time and provide capacity for future growth;
- reduce crash numbers and severity;
- create savings in crash costs;
- improve operational safety;
- improve flood immunity; and
- deliver a more efficient and higher quality journey experience for freight, commuter and tourism/recreational traffic.
The project is part of a suite of major upgrades to the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast being delivered in partnership between the Australian and Queensland governments.
These upgrades are part of the Australian Government's strong commitment to a 10-year, $120 billion infrastructure investment pipeline delivering nationally significant projects - supporting regional connectivity, liveability and safety.
